More information

Originally from the Mediterranean basin, sage is a sub-shrub of the Lamiaceae family, often grown in gardens as a vegetable plant or simply for the beauty of its green, velvety foliage and mauve flowers.
Its name is a sort of diploma of effectiveness since salvia comes from the Latin salvare which means "to save" "to heal".
It is one of the sacred plants of the ancients.

The Romans harvested it with a special ceremony, without the intervention of iron tools (it is believed that iron salts would be incompatible with sage), "in a white tunic, bare and well-washed feet", after having sacrificed to the beforehand with bread and wine.
Throughout the Middle Ages, it remained a primordial plant and was used in many preparations: Celestial Water, Imperial Water, etc.

At the time of the great plague epidemics in Europe, sage was one of the components of the famous "vinegar of the four thieves" reputed to protect against this disease.
This is confirmed by the saying: “who has sage in his garden, does not need a doctor”.
The oil which lends itself to several applications must be used with caution because of the thujone and phytoestrogens it contains, it must not be abused and it should be avoided during the first months of pregnancy (risk of miscarriage) or while breastfeeding.

Main components of essential oil

  • Ketones: thujone 35-70% (mixture of alpha-thujone and beta-thujone), camphor 8-37%
  • Monoterpenes: limonene
  • Sesquiterpenes 8 - 15%
  • 1,8-cineole 8-24%, borneol
  • Salviol (diterpenol)
