Words by Anny Schneider

This raw shea butter from Burkina Faso has been handcrafted and used for millennia in Africa.

Thanks to its richness in omega fatty acids of all types (3, 6, 9), and in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, F, Shea butter soothes irritations, facilitates healing and regenerates dry skin in depth.

It also restores shine to the hair by nourishing the scalp, while protecting the hair fibers.

Apply delicately with your fingertips, especially rub the tips and roots.

This filtered shea butter comes from the cold trituration of shea nuts grown in Brukina-Fasso.

In this nut there is a kernel that is cold pressed, not deodorized and without any other treatment, which explains its characteristic smell.

Color and appearance may vary from batch to batch, this is a raw product.

More information

The French name shea comes from the Wolof language of Senegal ghariti which means "butter tree".

This stocky tree 10 to 12 m high is native to the savannah in West and Central Africa and is found in around twenty countries on a strip extending over more than 5,000 km.

It only gives its first flowers and therefore its first fruits after about 20 years of cultivation.

The creamy white flowers, very fragrant and appreciated by bees, appear in the dry season (between November and January) on leafless trees.

They produce green fruits in the form of clusters.

This large edible berry contains one, or even two, hard nuts similar to an avocado pit.

From these whitish nuts is extracted the "butter" of shea which can contain up to 55% fat.

In this nut there is a kernel that is cold pressed, not deodorized and without any other treatment, which explains its characteristic smell.

In West African countries, shea butter is traditionally used for food, health and care of skin and hair, in soap and for sacred rituals and ceremonies.

Raw shea has a relatively high content of vitamin E and antioxidants.

This butter is essential in your home care, it protects, softens and restructures the skin, and nourishes and restores shine to the hair.

The production of shea butter is an ancestral activity in the Sahel.

Women are the main players in this sector despite the many difficulties they face.

The ecological exploitation of shea is a real lever of development for the whole community.
