Despite the fact that Ajowan (or ajwain) is an Apiaceae (or Umbelliferae) its high concentration of thymol makes it a widely used bactericide in India, where it has been used as an intestinal antiseptic for millennia.
Pure or very diluted in vegetable oil for use wth children, it is applied to the abdomen against colic, or even muscles in case of pain and localized inflammation.
This Ajowan organic essential oil from India is steam distilled from the seeds of the plant.
Invigorating and energizing, ajowan is used to treat many infections.
Ajowan is also called Anise of India, Ammi of India, Nounkha and it is native to the dry states of India (Rajasthan and Gujarat).
The essential oil mainly contains:
Monoterpene phenols: thymol (40-50%), carvacrol (5%)
Monoterpenes: gamma-terpinene (20-35%), paracymene (20-25%), camphene
Essential oils with similar properties:
Ceylon cinnamon (bark), bee balm, compact oregano, mountain savory, thymol thyme, sweet wintergreen.
