More information

It is a plant of the Bursaceae family like elemi, incense, dammar, okoumé or copal.

It is a plant of both rooting and lifting to the sky.

Boswellia frereana is a plant species native to northern Somalia where locals call it 'Dhidin' or 'Maydi' (other spellings include: Meydi, Meyti, Maidi, Maieti and Mayeti) or 'king of all incense".

It is also known as the Yigaar (or Yegaar) tree.

The Boswellia frereana is a small tree often stunted, sometimes with a parasol port, which grows in semi-desert regions, it has extremely long roots to fetch water from the depths.

Frereana incense is considered one of the most valuable and rare incense in the world due to its superior quality and rarity.

Growers must wait until the tree is at least 8 years old before they can harvest the resin, and even then only small amounts can be harvested each year.

The use of Frereana incense has expanded beyond its traditional use in religious ceremonies and purification rituals.

Today, it is used in the manufacture of perfumes, cosmetics, personal care products and even food products.

However, due to the rarity of this resin, its exploitation is regulated and subject to annual harvest quotas to ensure the sustainability of the tree and preserve its natural environment.

Besides its aromatic uses, people in the Horn of Africa and the tip of the Arabian Peninsula also use it for medicinal purposes; they make a paste of it called "malmal" and apply it to the joints to treat inflammation and arthritis.

Excellent for treating mouth ulcers and for dental/gum hygiene.

The properties of B.Frereana are antibacterial, antispasmodic, analgesic, digestive, tonic and uterine.

Frankincense frereana is classified as an Ayurvedic herb in this multi-millennium medicine from India.

On a spiritual level, frankincense was valued in ancient times in worship and as medicine and is still an important frankincense resin, especially in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, pre-Islamic temples and mosques.

It has a sweet and sharp citric aroma that is ideal to use in a diffuser.
